Endocrine System - by Landen Hartsoe

  • Pituitary Gland- "master gland". Secretes many vital hormones
  • Hypothalamus- controls pituitary gland and many other functions of homeostasis.
  • Thyroid Gland- regulates metabolism.
  • Pancreas- releases digestive enzymes into the digestive tract and also relases hormones to regulate blood sugar.
  • Adrenal Glands- responds to triggers such as fear, anger, or low blood sugar by releasing epinephrine (Adrenaline).
  • Gonads- release sex organs via testicles and ovaries.
  • Peneal Gland- creates melatonin

Endocrine System

  • the endocrine system creates and distributes hormones that regulate body systems and homeostasis.
  • Many major hormones:
    • Insulin- lowers blood sugar level
    • Glucagon- raises blood sugar level
    • follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)- stimulates development and maturation of a follicle in one of a woman’s ovaries
    • leutinizing hormone (LH)- causes the bursting of ovarian follicle (ovulation).
    • endorphines- help relieve pain.
    • thyroid hormones- regulate metabolism
    • androgens- male sex hormones
      • testosterone- most prominent form of androgen
    • estrogen- female sex hormones

  • Two glands regulate endocrine system
    • Hypothalamus
    • Pituitary gland
      • both regulate by releasing hormones into the bloodstream
        • FSH and LH production (important to reproduction)ics
        • production of diuretics and antidiuretic hormones
        • produce endorphines for pain reducton
