Respiratory System - by Jasmine Williams

Repiratory system is the body system that performs gas exchange and gives the organism the ability to breathe.

  • Structure/Function:

Main organs of the Respiratory system and their functions:
  • Lungs- The main organ of the system

. The lungs bring oxygen inside and breathes out the carbon dioxide. The blood cells within the lungs carry the oxygen to the body cells that need it.
  • Trachea - Also known as the windpipe, the air we breathe is filtered by the trachea.
  • Bronchi - two air tubes attached to the trachea, the bronchi carries the air directly into the lungs
  • Diaphragm -It is where the breathing begins. When we breathe in, it contracts. The space that the lungs are held within enlarges. The space expands when we breathe out. The main muscle used in breathing is the diaphragm.

Other organs of the system
-noes
-mouth
-pharynx
-epiglottis
-larynx
-aveoli
-lungs
-capillaries

  • Enzymes/Hormones that affect the system:

Enzymes of Metabolism-enzymes that convert nutrient molecules(glucose) into cell energy.

Carbonic Anhydrase - It helps combine carbon dioxide with water forming carbonic acid. Helping the carbon dioxide travel through the blood.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme - an enzyme only found in the respiratory system. It helps the kidneys volume of extracellular fluid stay constant.

  • Regulation:

The respiratory system is regulated by the organs within the system (such as lungs, heart, and diaphram). The Carbonic Anhydrase and the ACE affect the body system.
The rythmicity of the medulla controlls breathing.

  • Communication:

The respiratory system moves oxygen into the body and eventually into the blood. The circulatory system distributes the new oxygen throughout the body. The nervous system tracks the oxygen concentration of the blood.

The pathway of air

Starts in the nasal cavities > pharynx > trachea > primary bronchi (right & left) > secondary bronchi > tertiary bronchi > bronchioles > alveoli

Interesting information about the Respiratory system

  • ‍The right lung is slightly larger than the left.
  • The surface area of the lungs is roughly the same size as a tennis court.
  • The capillaries in the lungs would extend 1,600 kilometres if placed end to end.
  • half a liter of water a day through breathing.
  • A person sleeping usually breathes about 12 to15 times a minute.
  • Breathing rate is faster in women and children than in men.
