The Muscular System - by Kelsey McCarter

  • The Muscular System is the ability to move and be mobile. The way our muscles move is by converting chemical energy to mechanical energy. Muscles also help move things through the organs. For example, food moving through the digestive organs. The main functions of the muscular system is to produce movement, maintain posture, stabilize joints, and generate heat.‍‍
Structure/Function:‍‍
  • Skeletal Muscle Tissue- Most abundant; Produces movement; Fibers come together to make bundles which come together to form musc
les; controlled by the Somatic Nervous System (SNS).
  • Smooth Muscle Tissue- Forms muscle layers in the walls of the digestive tract, bladder, various ducts, arteries and veins, and many more organs; controlled by Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
  • Cardiac Muscle Tissue- Crosses between smooth and striated muscles; Helps the heart pump blood throughout the body.
Enzymes/Hormones:Musc1.gif
  • Testosterone- Growth hormone; has a muscle building effect.
  • Estrogen- The rising level of estrogen causes the smooth muscle to express oxytocin.
  • ATP- The energy source of the muscular system. It gives the muscles the energy to contract and move.
  • Aldolase- When muscle damage occurs aldolase depletes.
  • Creatine Phosphokinase- Helps turn the protein, creatine, into an easy energy source for muscle cells.
  • Aspartate Aminotransferase- Found in muscle cells but most likely in the liver.
  • Lactate Dehydrogenase- When a muscle is damaged or inflammed this enzyme increases significantly.
Regulation:
  • The Muscular System is controlled by the nervous system. When your body gets to cold the nervous system sends out signals to the brain to tell the body to shiver that way the body temperature doesn't get to low.
  • When the calcium levels get to low then the muscles feel weak and they may cramp up.
Communication:
  • The Muscular System tells the nervous system to send out signals to the brain.
  • Protects the Skeletal System.
  • In the Digestive System the Muscular System helps the food move down through the body.
